Regulating Pedals

Pedal regulation is the precise mechanical adjustment of a piano's pedal system to ensure the rods, levers, and dampers interact correctly with the keys and strings. With the damper pedal, if the rod has too much distance to move before engaging the dampers, then the dampers won't move fully away from the strings. This can also cause the player to need to push much more force on the pedal for the sustain to work. In lots of cases, the sustain pedal won't even engage, with the dampers moving away from the strings. If there isn't enough distance, then the dampers will move too far away from the strings when you press the sustain pedal, causing excessive ringing. This is because the dampers will have much farther to travel to get back to the strings to dampen them once the pedal is released.
